BIOGRAPHY
I was born in a log cabin in rural Maryland, but spent my formative years in the seamy, creative crucible of Miami. My work continues to be inspired by the years I spent there, painting public murals, to introduce something colorful, crafted, and considerate into locations that may otherwise be forgotten, overlooked, or avoided. As my process evolved, I pushed my creative interactions deeper into Miami’s urban wilderness, long before there was a single gallery and barely a few artists in Wynwood. That led me to photographing and documenting communities of people who inhabit those marginal areas, as an effort to bridge division that fragments humanity. Eventually , I sought a more concise focus on the places and people who inspired those early revelations, through multimedia documentary. That focus propelled me to New York City, to study at Parsons School of Design and School of Visual Arts. I still live in Brooklyn and work in a combination of media to conflate community.
BIOGRAPHY
I was born in a log cabin in rural Maryland, but spent my formative years in the seamy, creative crucible of Miami. My work continues to be inspired by the years I spent there, writing and painting public murals, to introduce something colorful, crafted, and considerate into locations that may otherwise be forgotten, overlooked, or avoided. That led directly to photographing and documenting communities of people who inhabit those marginal areas, as an exploration of how divergent communities can coexist and relate to one another. So began my fascination in the synthesis of dichotomy and its ability to bridge divisions that fragment humanity. That work propelled me to New York City, to study at Parsons School of Design and School of Visual Arts. Currently, I continue to work in a combination of media, to build narratives that engage people to search for common ground.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Humanity is a delicate balance of stratum, not mixed together, but built upon one another to form community. Working in a combination of media, I build narratives that engage people to search for common ground. I found my early creative inspiration in Miami, a typically divided city, which drove me to explore how divergent communities can coexist and relate. So began my fascination in the synthesis of dichotomy and its ability to raise awareness of unseen or forgotten worlds, softening our collective fear of the unknown. Art provides a platform to bring people into dialogue with others outside their realm of understanding. In life, we confront division of every sort: class, race, political, religious, levels of education, creative preference, and even emotional states. What we do with those everyday encounters and challenges is so powerful and important to affect positive change in the future. As an artist, it’s my obligation to rise to that challenge and show a path forward in a world that will never cease to provide barriers and reasons to divide.
